13.) From Creel into Copper Canyon

We rode back to San Juanito because it was getting late. We got up early the next day and rode back into Creel, past it, and towards Batopilas, which is in the bottom of the Copper Canyon complex. It was our intention to go to the bottom of the canyons.

After leaving Creel, we immediately come upon strange rock formations unlike any I have seen before.

These formations continue for several miles until they terminate in a lake surrounded by these round rock structures. The picture does not do the lake justice. It is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen. Definitely on par with Lake Tahoe.

At this point, the road becomes twisty. Quite twisty. And georgeous. Too bad that things are happening too fast to enjoy the scenery. There are some pretty significant cliff exposures on many of the turns, which is keeping the pucker factor high for me, especially since I am not a hugely experienced rider, and by bike does have knobbies on it.

This sort of riding continued for a good 100 miles. We thought we were going towards Batopilas, but, as is not unusual in Mexico, where you think you are going and where you actually are going are sometimes two different things. In actuality, we were not going to Batopilas. We ended up in Bailsachi - where there is a bus stop - and where happened the Copper Canyon Tequila Incident as documented in the next blog entry.
